This is a Pied Cormorant (Phalacrocorax varius) A native Australian waterbird found all around our coast and waterways. They are excellent swimmers, hunting fish underwater and are a familiar sight standing on posts or rocks drying their feathers in the sun.
I have now found a beautiful old piece of Mornington Pier complete with a “closed” sign, to locate this guy on. Any number of cormorants would have stood in this exact position on this post before I came along. Very happy with this!!
