Hi, I’m Julian.
Since I was a child I’ve been fascinated by the natural world which I love to document in my artwork.
Fast forward and I now live on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria with my beautiful wife, surrounded by Australian bush, with native wildlife that regularly visits including kookaburras, parrots, blue tongue lizards and about twenty Australian Magpies that think they own the property.
I aim to work my way through all the major Australian fauna as sculpture and will have done a piece of each before I hang up the tools. But I certainly don’t plan to restrict myself just to Australian fauna. There are too many fabulous animals on this planet to only do the Aussie ones.
I also love working with wood so I place as much care selecting and preparing the wooden base as I do the sculpture above.
For my art, finding that defining movement is key. I don't want to make static artwork. I want to see movement, and it has to be authentic. Not dramatic, just real.

Commissions: If you have a creature or image you would like brought to life as a sculpture, I’d love to create it for you. I really enjoy the challenge of creating art with a sense of life and movement from a static image. Drop me a line and I’ll get back to you within 24 hours.
My Approach
Each piece that I do is from one specific photo of the subject. Whilst I get the animal’s dimensions from elsewhere, I remain focused on that image. That’s the way I like to catch a moment which also guarantees that I don’t duplicate a sculpture.
Sculpting is my flow and can take up a lot of time. It generally ends when I have either stabbed myself with wire or my wife stomps on the floor above me to let me know that I’m required upstairs.
A Simple line
Just as charcoal lays down a line, that leads to another line and so on, wire offers something similar, laying down a two dimensional image which can then be fleshed out with just as much material as is necessary.
Documenting the process
I’ve been setting up a camera on time-lapse as I work on my latest pieces, and I put these up on Instagram. Be sure to follow me there to see behind the scenes on the process and my latest work coming together
